Roccio Clapie

Roccio Clapie

Roccio Clapie

The steep valley that runs from Ruata to the Grand Truc, and beyond, to form the North side of the valley of Pramollo, is dotted with large jutting rocks, huge balconies from which to observe the world of Rio Risagliardo flowing down there, divided into two branches , and who carved that land. Beautiful and inaccessible places inhabited since the dawn of time.
Leaving from Sapiatti, which in patois means raking fields, a path leads to one of these large gneiss stones shaped like balcony, Roccio Clapie.
On the top of the giant triangular stone, hundreds of engravings make that rock a monument. An open book inscribed in almost indelible letters, able to overcome the millennia to come to talk us about the fathers of the fathers of our fathers. Neolithic rock carvings, they say. It is hard even to imagine the time when those carvings have been living. They have seen the Romans, and before the Celts, and then the clumsy lordling of the Middle Ages, and even the executioners of the Inquisition and the fierce absurd religious struggles. Those carvings have seen our fathers to work and struggle to invite us through time to write about them thanks to those who came before.
Freezes the blood playing with the mind to run in the time and discover it eternal, without beginning and without end, like a god. Yet it’s nice nice nice.
So much game we are allowed to leave us believe to be different from animals, and we should remember that.
Shines in mind the image of those far away fathers, thousands and thousands of years, bent on the large rock suspended in the wind, intent on digging, with round stones in tough calluses hands, those signs that today come to our eyes from the dawn of time.
And they did not know, as we do not know who will read our signs, if we are able to send them so far away through time of time that will be. If it will be.
The engravings of Roccio Clapie, cupels, ie hemispheres dug rotating a hard stone on the softer gneiss of the rock, and the crosses, which should not be seen as such because sculpted much earlier Christ to represent for the first time the man, and many other signs, obscure to the modern mind, are the sacred furnishings of their fathers’ religion, that perhaps worshiped the earth and the sun and the stars. Certainly with fear, probably with respect.
For this Roccio Clapie is a temple, before being a stone and before being a monument of ancient art.
A library, sacred like and much more than a temple. Of a church.
To say that man should be different from animals. That is better.
